Weekend slate will determine fate for many clubs

Heading into the final Sunday of regular season for Premier, North/South Intermediate, Amateur and Amateur AAA South, many clubs find themselves fighting for a post-season berth, while others are jockeying for a potential BYE. We could not have asked for more meaningful games this weekend across the league.

We will start in Intermediate,

In the North, New Providence Reds and JC Scrappers are in the drivers seats currently to obtain the 1 & 2 seeds, though which will get what is still in the air. The JC Vipers have grasp of the 3rd seed right now, while Livingston As, Ironbound Rays and Teaneck Yankees all sit at 9-7 in the standings. The Yellow Jackets at 8-8 sit in 7th, with the Morristown Bulls in 8th at 7-8. Don't count out Colt .45s or Bergen Blue Jays though. The Blue Jays will play Saturday and a DH Sunday with the Yellow Jackets, which could propel them in the standings with 3 W's. Likewise, Colt 45s have a DH with Montclair and a single with Morristown Pirates to round out there season, and 3 wins could let them jockey into a post season seed. The most notable matchup is the Bergen Blue Jays v North Jersey Yellow Jackets, which could seal the fate for both teams on Sunday. Last Spring, the Blue Jays took both games on the final day of regular season to edge them out of the postseason. This Spring, Yellow Jackets will look to return the favor and not repeat history.

In the South, the top seeds are still up for grabs. We start with the matchup of the weekend, where the NJ Vipers and NJ Bulldogs square off in a battle for the Eastern crown and #1 seed. The Vipers need to win just 1 to secure the spot for the second straight season, something that cursed them in 2014. In the West, the Twins battle the Cubs, who are on the cusp of a playoff berth (currently sitting 9th). These are must wins for the Cubbies on Sunday. The Edison Reds will face last years South Champions, Dunellen Pirates, with neither holding a guaranteed spot yet for the playoffs. In the South only 5 tickets have been punched for the post season (Middlesex, Vipers, Bulldogs, Beavers & Cardinals).  South will be a fun slate of games to keep an eye on this weekend, where only the strong will survive!

Moving to Amateur, there are three teams locked into the post season right now. East Coast Blaze, Paterson Black Sox and Bergen Buzz. The top seed will land in the laps of either the Black Sox or Blaze when Sunday is over. With 3 spots left, there are 5 clubs in contention with 2 games left to secure their spots. The NJ Blue Jayz are in the driver's seat. If they win both against the Lodi Orioles, they will punch their ticket, and possibly knock the O's out if the Ducks or Red Wings can take care of business. The Brew Crew, currently in 5th, battle the Blaze who are vying for the top seed. Blaze need to only win 1 to lock in home field throughout. The Red Wings will battle the Braves for 2, while the Ducks get the red hot Paterson Black Sox, winners in 11 of their last 13.

In South Amateur AAA, it would appear the NJ Spartans and Jersey Jayz are locked as the top seeds. The Squirrels will play 3 over the next 4 days to try and bump up the standings. NJ COA have clinched their first playoff spot this Spring, an incredible feat after watching the club assemble in 2014. The final 3 spots will be between the Flying Squirrels, Perth Amboy A's, RV Indians and CJ Slaughterhouse.

Finally, in Premier there are just two teams fighting for the final spot, with 11 teams already heading to the August post season play. In the North,  the Somerville Giants flexed their muscles this Spring, and have gone 17-0. The only team that stands in their way of a perfect Spring is the Boro Brewers, who will look to be spoilers on Sunday. The Caribbean Reds currently hold the 2 seed, and play a tough Avenel team Sunday where they could potentially clinch their BYE. Kearny Rangers, NJ Rays and Michael's Roscommon Chicos are all still contending for the 2 seed however, and seeding may shuffle significantly over the next 5 days. Finally, the Clifton Slates hold a slight edge on the Snappers for the final spot, with 3 games remaining for both clubs. The Slates battle the Chicos and Snappers face off with the Rays, all games with playoff implications attached. All games will be going on at the same time too, which will add to the suspense.

Down South, the Perth Amboy Braves sit atop the standings at 12-3, with the Garden State Senators close behind at 10-5. The Braves will play a DH against the surging Blue Jays, who head into the weekend 4-0-1 in their last 5 games. The Blue Jays first will see the NJ Rays on Saturday, where a win will see them overtake Avenel for the 3rd seed. The Avenel Angels will see the Caribbean Reds and Bergen Minutemen in a split DH Sunday, which could propel them into the 2 seed depending on how the Senators fair with Kearny and Carteret Thunder. Carteret is looking to gain a shot at home field Saturday, needing to move into a 3 or 4 seed. They will play tonight against Boro, followed by a Sunday showdown with Garden State.

Our Intermediate AAA and Amateur AAA North are both extended through August 2nd due to a full slate of games that were necessary for make ups. Regardless, this weekend will be important for those on the cusp of playoff madness.

In Int AAA, the big matchup to watch is Garfield Mariners hosting the Montclair Mets. The Mets need to win in order to position themselves into the 7 or 8 spot, while Garfield needs at least 1 win to remain in that top 8. The Jersey Crushers will need to win their final 2 games to realistically find themselves in. Parsippany Shockers, Union Beach and Riverside all in good position with 3+ games remaining on their schedules. The Nutley Royals and Las Aguilas, are battling for the top seed which could become more clear after this weekend.

Finally, in Amateur AAA North, the Jersey Stars, Kearny Cubs, Jersey City Lionz and Brick City Brawlers are all headed into the post season. All clubs are still part of the race for the final two seeds, and should be fun to see how the first regular season of Amateur AAA ends.

League is packed with more meaningful games this week than ever in our history. This will be an incredible slate to watch and follow as the day develops. Good luck to all our clubs, and keep an eye on the site for updates throughout the weekend.
