Fowler throws complete game with 15K's, Stanton 3-RBI and Castro 2-RBI

Bridgewater, NJ – The Somerset Clippers rallied late, scoring 6 runs in the 8th inning, in route to a 9-4 victory over Las Aquilas on a picture perfect Saturday afternoon at TD Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater in front of a capacity crowd. Jared Fowler pitched a complete game, striking out 15 batters, including 9 in the last 4 innings of the game.

Through the first 5 innings, there was not much for the legions of Clipper faithful to cheer about, as the Clippers did not have a hit and were behind 4-0.

In the 6th inning, the Clippers bats finally woke up. Matt Mitchell singled, breaking up the no-hitter and after Mike McCrea got hit by a pitch and Terrell Foster walked, Mitchell scored on a passed ball cutting the lead to 4-1. Freddie Castro lined a 2-run single to left field and the Clippers were back in the game, trailing by 1.

The rally gave Fowler new life on the mound and he did not disappoint. He was lights out for the next two innings, keeping the game close and giving the offense a chance to complete the comeback.

In the top of the 8th inning, George Tomasello led off with a single to right center field. Gabe Vasquez followed with a single of his own and both runners moved up on a passed ball, giving the Clippers runners on 2nd and 3rd with no one out. Pete Trentacosta singled to center field, scoring pinch runner Luis Rivera to tie the game. Matt Mitchell stepped up and also singled to center field, driving home Vasquez to give the Clippers a 5-4 advantage. Mike McCrea singled to right center field, driving home Trentacosta and after a walk to Foster, the Clippers had the bases loaded no one out leading 6-4.

Brian Stanton stepped to the plate, pinch hitting for the Clippers leading hitter, Zack Markle, who injured his leg in his previous at bat. Stanton wasted no time and promptly lined a double down the left field line, clearing the bases and giving the Clippers a commanding 9-4 lead.

Fowler, after giving up a leadoff single in the bottom of the 8th inning, struck out the side and in the 9th got help from his defense who turned a beautiful 4-6-3 double play for the first two outs of the inning. Fittingly, Fowler struck out the last batter for his 15th strikeout of the day and the Clippers celebrated a great comeback victory.

The Clippers would like to thank The New West Brook Tavern, who sponsored the team and showed the players and fans great hospitality after the game.

With the win, the Clippers improve to 8-1 and are set for a showdown with the 9-1 NJ Vipers on Sunday morning at 9:00AM sharp at Billian Field.
