NJABL WOOD ALL-STAR GAMES & 10th ANNUAL ARMANDO DIAZ SR MEMORIAL GAME

This weekend marks a big slate of games at Newark Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. On Saturday, the league will kick off All-Star festivities with both wood All-Star games. The rosters have been set, the All-Star page has been created and the players have been revealed. All that is left, is getting the players onto the field now. As players will soon discover, the All-Star game is a special event for the league... something we have worked hard to plan and expect to deliver an experience no other league can match. Without ruining surprises, it will certainly be a sight to see and a game all players should strive to participate in the future.

In the North Wood vs South Wood All-Star game (11AM), Jim Bruno of the North Jersey Yellow Jackets will skipper the North and Tim Maynard of the NJ Shockers will take honors for the South. Both squads are stacked with league talent, which should make this a fun game to watch. League leaders like Harold Salce, Mark Tiarra, Rich Colon and Matt Rizzuto will al suit up for the North squad, while Bill Ryan, Steve Crampton, Sal Visone, Greg Caso are all expected to be in attendence in the South dugout. Every team will be represented throughout the league.

In Premiere (2PM), Gamaliel Calderon will manage a talented South Roster vs Joe Oliva on the North side. In the South, strikeout leader Al Tampa is expected to start the game, with offensive powers Zachary Esparra, Luis Quintero and Sammy Parilla all expected to be on the field. For the North, Mike Walker will likely get the ball to start, and will be backed by Sharif Upchurch, Chris Sealy, DJ Psarras, Manny Guerrero and teammate Matt McGuire.

Directly following the Premiere All-Star Game at 6:35pm is the Newark Bears hosting the Trois-Rivieres Aigles, with a fireworks finale to end a big day of baseball.

On Sunday, the league celebrates the 10th Annual Armando Diaz Sr Memorial Game. The Perth Amboy Braves of the South will travel to face Armando Diaz and the Union Knights in a stadium showdown.

Started in 2002, the Kearny Rangers played the Englewood Marauders at Yogi Berra Stadium(NJ Jackals) and won the game 15-12

In 2003, the Rangers took on the Marauders again and suffered their only loss, 6-0 in the memorial game at Riverfront Stadium (Newark Bears).

2006 now with the Union Knights, Armando was appointed manager and took on the Caribbean Reds at Waterfront Park(Trenton Thunder) and won 5-4 on a walkoff hit by Jamie Santacruz.

2008 the Union Knights took on the Kingsbridge Angels and shared the day with them as the Armando Diaz Sr/Evan Bookstaver Memorial Game and won 3-1 at Waterfront Park(Trenton Thunder)

2009 Union Knights took on Angels again and shared the day again as the Armando Diaz Sr/Evan Bookstaver Memorial Game and won 15-1 at Riverfront Stadium(Newark Bears)

2010 Union Knights took on Essex Bulls and won the game 20-7 at Riverfront Stadium(Newark Bears).

2011 Union Knights took on the Kingsbridge Angels in a split day(6/26 & 7/31) doubleheader at Riverfront Stadium(Newark Bears) and shared the days as the Armando Diaz Sr/Evan Bookstaver Memorial Games and won game 1 by score of 11-10 on a walkoff hit by Steve Berson. Game 2 ended tied 2-2 due to time restriction.

2012 Union Knights took on the Englewood Marauders in a doubleheader(5/20) and won both games at Dutchess Stadium(Hudson Valley Renegades) by scores of 2-0 and 4-3. Then took on Morristown Patriots on 6/9 at Yogi Berra Stadium(NJ Jackals) and won the game 11-3.

The Memorial Game was not played in 2004-2005, or 2007 due to scheduling conflicts.

The Knights hold a record of 9-0-1 in the Memorial Game, and will face a potent Perth Amboy team on Sunday, 10AM. The Braves will be playing the game as a memorial to one of their players fathers as well, Gonzalo Cruz Sr who passed away earlier this season. It should be a memorable Fathers Day game for both teams on Sunday... so come out and be part of the action!
